HWG Counsel John Amaya Achieves Victory Under Convention Against Torture

HWG Counsel John Amaya recently achieved a victory for clients seeking protection under the Convention Against Torture (“CAT”).  In 2018, 1.7 percent of CAT applications resulted in an immigration judge granting this kind of relief.  HWG represented Maria Perez and her two teenage daughters before the U.S. Immigration Court in Baltimore.  After bearing the burden to demonstrate that it was more likely than not that the family would be tortured if removed to El Salvador, all three clients were granted relief under CAT.

Amaya, a former senior advisor in the Department of Homeland Security, leads HWG’s Immigration and Homeland Security Practice Group.  The group represents individuals, businesses, and foreign governments in connection with global immigration, cross-border investigations, related litigation, and congressional investigations.
