Kent Bressie to Chair Industry Panel for Undersea Cable Workshop at ITU Green Standards Week in Madrid

September 16, 2013

Kent Bressie, a partner at Wiltshire & Grannis LLP and head of its international practice, will chair the industry support panel at a workshop of the Joint Task Force investigating the potential use of undersea telecommunications cables for ocean and climate monitoring and disaster warning.  The workshop will be held in Madrid, Spain, on September 19 and 20, 2012, as part of the third annual Green Standards Week of the International Telecommunication Union (“ITU”).

The Joint Task Force was established by the ITU, the World Meteorological Organization, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (“UNESCO”) to examine dual marine data-telecommunications cables.  Kent had previously authored a report for the ITU (available here) examining legal challenges and opportunities for the deployment of marine data sensors on undersea telecommunications cables.  He also chairs the Joint Task Force’s legal committee.

An expert on telecommunications regulation and international trade and investment, Kent has extensive experience with the whole range of legal and regulatory issues affecting undersea cables, including: national security and investment reviews; telecoms licensing; environmental permitting; export controls and sanctions; market access; corporate and commercial transactions; and the law of the sea.  He has represented undersea cable operators, suppliers, and investors in projects on six continents.
